I like this question because it takes the focus beyond the sessions themselves. Coaching should of course be useful in the moment, but it’s real value is what stays with a leader afterwards. One thing that stood out was a clear sense that coaching should leave leaders with a better way of noticing themselves - how they respond under pressure; what they tend to avoid; where they have more choice than they first realised. A leader who is self-aware and understands their own patterns is usually better placed to course correct. They can notice when they are slipping into an old response, pause for a moment, and consciously choose their next steps. I also heard a lot about confidence – the confidence that comes from knowing what matters to you and trusting yourself to act on it. In our current environment, many leaders are carrying a significant amount of uncertainty. Coaching can help leaders reconnect with their capability, especially when they are stepping into something bigger or less familiar. Several coaches also pointed to the value of a developing a learning mindset, recognising that leadership does not stand still. Leaders are often navigating change at multiple levels - organisational changes, team changes and shifting expectations on leaders. They are better equipped for whatever leadership asks of them next if they leave coaching with more curiosity and the desire to keep learning, One idea that really resonated with me was that successful coaching shouldn't create reliance on the coach. Over time, leaders start to internalise the reflection, the questioning and the sense-making they practise in coaching, so they can use it when a new challenge appears. Leaders are increasingly working in contexts that have competing tensions with ambiguous outcomes. Coaching helps leaders feel more able to stay with that complexity, rather than rushing too quickly to an immediate answer. The final insight I gained from asking this question was about the ripple effect of coaching. When a leader becomes more thoughtful, more grounded or more courageous in how they lead, it ripples out to the people around them and changes the interactions and conversations they have with their teams. What I took from our coaches’ response to the question of what do they hope leaders carry forward from coaching is that they hope leaders leave with capabilities that will serve them long into the future: greater self-awareness, increased confidence, the ability to stay curious in complexity and the courage continues to shift.
